Planning a winter garden

Updated: Aug 27, 2019

So we are in the working stages of a winter garden and beginning prep for next spring season. The loss this year due to the extreme weather was substantial and I am at a loss on it. So next year, everything will be in raised beds and hopefully I will have a larger greenhouse in place. We are also working on fencing the entire garden as the deer and rabbits cleaned out what the weather didn't get. So our gathering was meager this year.

Now we are laying out beds, and are starting more beans, and cole crops. Such as broccoli, spinach, rutabegas, carrots, beans (a variety) and cabbages. All the things that the cooler weather is best for. Also planning out my winter sowing which will be another post when we start it. This weekend sees a Tropical storm, Darion, that they are predicting will be hurricane force when it reaches us, so today we are battening down, securing livestock quarters more, and prepping for the change in weather. There might be some sun tomorrow in which case I will hit the areas around the garden and livestock pens with the pruner and chainsaw, clearing dead and weak limbs and trees. After that we will be making a new coop for the chickens in the herb garden and the Free Rangers. So that they can be secured in the worst weather and set up before winter arrives.
